Celebrity make-up artist James Vincent: social media is changing beauty

(Relaxnews) - Ahead of the 4th Makeup Show LA, the event's director of artistry James Vincent, who has worked with stars ranging from Lady Gaga to Liv Tyler, spoke to Relaxnews about the impact of social media on trend forecasting and which countries are exciting to him in terms of beauty innovations.

RN: For eyes and lips respectively which colors can we expect to see dominating the upcoming Makeup Show LA?

JV: Red made its mark on the lips on red carpets and runways in the last month and I expect it will be no different at the show. The Pantone Color of the year is Tangerine and I think many brands have taken that direction. Eyes are smoky for the next season and so many brands are bringing in mined metals or smoldering blacks and kohls to keep up with the trends.

RN: Which factors are having the biggest impact on beauty trends right now?

JV: Runway, red carpet and a 24 hour news cycle have changed the way we look at make-up and trend. Social media has managed to make it possible to see a trend in color, cut or application more easily than the past so trend forecasting has changed. In the past we knew two years ahead where designers were going but now with one award show or magazine cover a celebrity can excite the public and push a demand for new colors or textures immediately.

RN: Have you noticed an increase in layman beauty techniques due to the rise in YouTube beauty tutorials?

JV: Yes. I think we have to be cautious as Youtube is increasing knowledge and skill level but as there is no accountability for the accuracy of information many YouTube phenomenons have a credibility or celebrity without the proper knowledge or understanding and are giving opinion as fact without having any accountability for the misinformation they provide.

RN: Which countries do you consider to be the most exciting in terms of rising cosmetic brands?

JV: I think France and Italy continue to lead the pack in prestige but the US has managed to manufacture product that! the pub lic connects with. Upstarts in Poland and Canada are also making a mark and the UK and Asian markets like Japan and Korea are working to make their brands more high end.

RN: Which five retail brands do you think give the most professional look and why?

JV: I think every brand has something for the PRO Market but some of our biggest supporters for PRO business are Make Up For Ever, Temptu Pro, Crown Brush, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and Smashbox. All of these brands have product that is exciting for every artist and have programs set up to support the artist community and their celebrity or fashion clients.

Since its debut in 2005, the Makeup Show New York has expanded across America and Europe, and has become a key launch pad for new products and beauty trends. The Los Angeles edition runs March 17-18.
