Music on TV: What's THAT song?

SCANDAL-LIV

Love came in many forms this Valentines week. Sure, there was plenty of the chocolates-and-roses variety, but also Greys solidarity, violent foreplay, and whatever rip-your-heart-out magic it is that makes Scandals on-and-off-and-on-and-off leading couple so damn sexy and devastating all at the same time.

So, if youve been wondering Whats that song? while watching your favorite shows, were here to tell you.Check out our picksand the Spotify playlist below. (Warning for those still catching up on DVR:SPOILERSahead!)

SCANDAL (ABC)*The song: Stevie Wonder, I Dont Know WhyThe episode: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (214)The hook: In an episode filled with conflicted sexual encounters, the circuit-room rendezvous between Liv (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) took last nights ep to climax. Even as Liv tried to move past Fitzs unceremonious dumping, this fleeting moment of reconnection was as wrenching as it was hot. Though I Dont Know Why turns 45 years old this year, Wonders soulful howls Kick me when Im down, thats your rule Oh you never stop your cheatin ways I never knew how much love could hurt until I loved you baby could have been written specifically for Olivia as she, despite lookingtrs Jackie O. in her cream-colored Chanel suit, realized the President had relegated her to Marilyn status.Read Lindsey Bahrs recap

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (ABC Family)The song: MS MR, BonesThe episode: What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted (319)The hook:Another chiller from these PLL favorites to close out Tuesdays installment, which saw nearly everyone in Rosewood hoping to dig up the bones in one way or another. But Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Jason DiLaurentis (Drew Van Acker) were more literally on the hunt, probing deeper into the near-constant defilement of his sister Alisons grave. Just as they got close to the truth, an elevator crash and Jasons 59th-minute disappearance signaled there is much, much more digging to be done yet. A wouldnt have it any other way.Read Samantha Highfills recap

ENLIGHTENED (HBO)The song: Joanna Newsom, EsmeThe episode: The Ghost is Seen (205)The hook: Nice guys sometimesdo finish first. Sundays ep pivoted on painfully shy Tyler (Mike White) as Amy (Laura Dern) tried to use him to gather incriminating intel about Abaddon. In a happy accident, Tyler found a love connection with the bosss secretary Eileen (Molly Shannon) while doing Amys bidding. For a guy like Tyler, such a rom-com-ready plot would usually be stamped with the warning: This will end disastrously! But for at least one week, Newsoms ethereal, episode-ending tune affirmed that Kindness, kindness prevails! and let us linger in the warm fuzzies from Tylers transition from walking ghost to man in love.

GREYS ANATOMY (ABC)The song: Ellie Goulding, Dead in the WaterThe episode: Hard Bargain (915)The ho! ok: Though Rihannas Grammy stunner Stay played under a scene of active rebellion, it was what churned under the surface that drove last nights Greys. During the final montage, the nightingale-voicedBrits deep cut from Halcyon played as a small group of Seattle Grace stalwarts reluctantly moved forward with a plan to incorporate and buy out the hospital. Though its not entirely clear whether Dead in the Water describes the fate of Saving Grace LLC, its a very strong possibility it applies to the relationship between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) now that shes hiding her coup dPegasus plans from him.Read Samantha Highfills recap

SWITCHED AT BIRTH (ABC Family)The song: Sara Jackson-Holman, Break My HeartThe episode: Human/Need/Desire (206)The hook: Bay (Vanessa Marano) got into the Valentines spirit Monday, throwing a singles party to score some alone time with her crush Noah (Max Lloyd-Jones). Jackson-Holmans urgent track complemented Bays stress over Noahs hot-and-cold behavior, but it turned out Noah wasnt blowing off Bay. He just had more on his mind than she realized (he thought he was losing his hearing and worried hed be a rebound guy). The night ended with a kiss, but in those moments before the new couple became Facebook-official, Break My Heart expressed all the agony and ecstasy of the teens emotional overdrive.

THE FOLLOWING (Fox)The song: Farflung, Silver ShroomsThe episode: Mad Love (104)The hook: Though a cover of Mazzy Stars 94 ! hit Fade ! into You (byStumbleine feat. Steffaloo) provided dreamy relief at the end of the tightly wound series latest edition, the episode reached its fever pitch during a (literally) steamy moment between cultish kidnappers Emma (Valorie Curry) and Paul (Adan Canto). The former rivals found themselves hot, bothered, and in need of a shower after their hostage briefly escaped and her capture turned into murder-as-foreplay. The crescendo of the L.A. metalheads tantrically building 2008 track conveyed the former rivals sadistic, strange slow-burn sexual tension.

CSI: NY (CBS)The song: Maudlin Strangers, Long Way DownThe episode: Seth and Apep (915)The hook: With percussion by CSI: NY star Gary Sinises son Mac, Maudlin Strangers guitar throttler punched up a lab scene last Friday night with the pleading lyrics, Stop me from the killing that you know I love. The CSI crew is working on it, fellas.

HAWAII FIVE-0 (CBS)The song: Ke$ha, CMonThe episode: Kekoa (The Warrior) (316)The hook: The self-professed ghost-lovers pop confections have been all over the TV airwaves these last few weeks, with placements onAmerican Idol,Vegas, The Mindy Project, Bunheads, The Following, and Whitney. But its only appropriate that theWarriors ode to wine coolers and getting up to no good appeared during a booze-soaked bachelorette party on Monday nightsFive-0 the title of which translated to The Warrior. (Bonus: The scene before included GinuwinesMagic Mike-approved male stripper anthem, Pony.)

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (The CW)*The song: Bruno Mars, Locked Out of HeavenTh! e episode: Trust No One (113)The hook: Like Rihanna, Mars tore up Sundays Grammys with his Police-evoking chart topper. The track got a little more love during a Valentines flash mob in last nights Beast. Vincents (Jay Ryan) declaration of love for Catherine (Kristin Kreuk) was as fun as it was surprising because, really, who doesnt love a well-timedpas-de-bourre or a liberal use of jazz hands?
